   Human Frontier Science Program (HSFP) Grants

The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) has issued its 2013 call for Letters of Intent for Young Investigators Grants and Program Grants.  These grants supports international collaborations in basic research with emphasis placed on novel, innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to fundamental investigations in the life sciences.  Grants provide 3 years' support for 2 – 4 member teams; successful teams may be awarded up to US$450,000.

HFSP programs include the Natural Sciences and Engineering fields, with an emphasis on bringing biologists together with scientists from fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science and engineering to focus on problems at the frontier of the life sciences.  The principal applicant must be located in one of the HFSP member countries (Australia, India, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, South Korea, Switzerland, United States, member states of the EU, and Canada [NSERC and CIHR]).   However, co-investigators may be from any other country.  Preference is given to intercontinental teams.

Deadlines are as follows:
21 March 2012: Deadline for registration (includes getting a password) and obtaining a reference number for a 2013 application
28 March 2012: Deadline from submission of LOI

   Canada's Rising Starts in Global Health

This competition, funded by Grand Challenges Canada (GCC), is aimed at emerging Canadian scientists in the field of global health, and seeks proposals that address persistent health challenges in the developing world. Applicants must have completed a PhD or health professional degree no more than 10 years ago, and must have a co-investigator in a low or middle-income country.  GCC will fund projects that propose  innovative scientific or technological solutions, integrated with delivery mechanisms that could be easily implemented in developing countries to improve health. 

Round Three provides $100,000 in seed grants for up to 20 successful proposals, with the possibility of additional scale–up grants of up to $1 million for each proposal.    The deadline for applications is 23 March 2012.  Full details of this competition can be found at: http://www.grandchallenges.ca/grand-challenges/gc1-stars/canadasrisingstars/.

   IDRC Small Grants

The Small Grants program offered by the Canadian Partnerships unit at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) has now been re-launched as a quarterly competition.  Universities and other organizations based in Canada that produce or share knowledge in fields related to international development are eligible to apply for these Small Grants, which fund events and dissemination activities/products. They also support research, knowledge-building, and knowledge-sharing projects in the field of International Development Studies.

Approved budgets under this call will range from $1,000 to $15,000 for events and small dissemination-based activities and products, and $20,000 to $60,000 for research and knowledge projects.  Full guidelines and application forms are available via the following website: http://www.idrc.ca/EN/Funding/Competitions/Pages/CompetitionDetails.aspx?CompetitionID=16
