Dalhousie is recognized for its long history of involvement in international development projects and activities, and at any given time is involved in up to twenty such projects. Through them, Dalhousie faculty members work with colleagues in lesser-developed countries to share, exchange and strengthen academic knowledge in a particular discipline, so that this knowledge might be applied in a local context to address pressing development issues such as poverty, health, public policy and reform, environmental management, etc. Major funders of international development initiatives at Dalhousie include the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
Increasingly, Dalhousie researchers are involved in international research and collaboration more broadly, with partners across the globe. Major funders of international research initiatives at Dalhousie include the European Commission and ISTPCanada.
IR&D provides a range of support services to Dalhousie units interested in participating in international projects.
