Description: The project was designed to help to develop increasingly responsible, integrated and effective approaches for the Gambia to address cultural, environmental, social and economic imperatives in planning settlements and designing/constructing buildings. At the university level, the project helped develop and implement an undergraduate academic program in community building through GTTI with degrees granted by the University of the Gambia; this included teacher training, curriculum development and academic and administrative support. At the sectoral level, the project helped to improve the level of knowledge and skill in the existing planning, design, and construction sectors of the Gambia. At the community level, the project increased awareness of sustainable built environments and formed teams of community, academic and sectoral members in the Gambia who worked together on specific community building projects.

Energy Conversion and Management in Sierra Leone

Due to the deterioration of the political situation in Sierra Leone, not all activities were completed.

Description: The project consisted of two consultative workshops to assist the Project Director in the development of a Code of Conduct for HIV/AIDS research involving civil society. In order to reinvigorate ‘good practice’ in HIV/AIDS research, policy and programming, expert reviewers from Canada and Sub-Saharan African countries took part in a single, two-pronged consultative workshop process to address persisting and emerging ethical dimensions in HIV/AIDS research, the integration of gender as a key determinant of health in HIV/AIDS research, and problems related to the dissemination of scientific information to civil society in a timely, accessible and meaningful manner. Description: As part of the Child Soldiers Initiative (CSI)'s overall research into the rehabilitation of child soldiers, including efforts to effectively integrate them into society post-conflict, CSI hosted a two-day workshop with the Network for Young People Affected by War (NYPAW) at Dalhousie University’s Centre for Foreign Policy Studies. The workshop took place on 23-24 September 2010, and focused specifically on the experiences of Sudanese youth integrating into Canadian society.

Description: The project provided training and field experience to the staff of the recently-created Community Fisheries Development Office. It helped staff increase their capacity to assist fishing communities and to develop and administer policy and regulations for community-based fisheries in Cambodia. Specific project activities included the organization and administration of a series of workshops and training sessions in collaboration with the CBCRM Learning and Research Network (LeaRN). Training included a combination of classroom activities and fieldwork which focused on common property rights, conflict management, institutional analaysis, and sustainable livelihoods frameworks and their applications to fisheries.

Description: Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) face the challenge of successful integrating persons with disabilities (PWDs) into the economical, educational and social structures of its society. Limited resources, inadequate general awareness, underdeveloped rehabilitation practices and infrastructural barriers have limited the successful inclusion of PWDs. Rehabilitation professionals and the NGO sector in BiH lack the capacity to provide adequate support to persons with disabilities. Recognizing the current need to improve the skill set in this area, a joint team from from the project partners organized and facilitated a workshop for medical professionals and NGO representatives and advocates in BiH that presented current practices in the following areas: a) wheelchair skills program, b) novel pharmaceutical therapies for PWDs, and c) innovative approaches to advocacy and awareness issues on an institutional level.

Description: This project’s objective was to strengthen individual credit unions in Belize, as well as their umbrella organization, the Belize Credit Union League (BCUL). A comprehensive diagnostic and needs assessment of the eight participating credit unions was conducted, which identified overall strengths and weaknesses of each organization as well as priority areas for improving operations. The diagnostic process included an on-site review of day-to-day operations, internal controls, lending practices, financial management, accounting systems, and related policies. Recommendations for remedial practical actions were made and this laid solid groundwork for development of a credit appraisal manual, as well as a program to train governing and decision-making bodies.

Description: From 20-21 May 2010, the Department of International Development Studies at Dalhousie hosted a conference aimed at contributing to the mainstreaming of sport and the Sport for Development and Peace (SDP) movement within development studies. The two-day event connected sports scholars working in the various areas of SDP research with researchers in development studies in order to build professional relations between these fields and establish theoretical and methodological bases for future SDP study. Through research presentations and keynote addresses, SDP researchers reflected on key challenges and development scholars offered theoretical and practical insights for understanding SDP.
